Oconto: History on the Bay

Located in the Northeastern corner of Wisconsin, Oconto lies on the spectacular shores of the Bay of Green Bay. A quick 30 minute drive north of the bustling city of Green Bay, Oconto is considered to be by many the start of the true Wisconsin Northwood’s. Situated between dense forests, beautiful wetlands, stunning shorelines and more than 33 sites on the National Register of Historic Places, you’ll see right away why Oconto is in itself “History on the Bay”.

As the county seat for Oconto County, Oconto maintains strong economic and social ties to its neighboring towns and cities including Little River, Oconto Falls, Lena, and Peshtigo.

Comprised of roughly 35 square blocks, Oconto’s north and south sides are separated by the beautiful Oconto River.

Nestled on the waters of the Bay of Green Bay, Oconto offers world class fishing in a quaint small town atmosphere everyone is sure to enjoy.

The City boasts many amenities for residents and visitors alike. Your day can be filled with everything from a picnic in one of our many City Parks, to a Zumba class at our Bond Community Center, to a camping trip at Holtwood Campground, to a round of golf at the Oconto Golf Club, to a boat ride down the Oconto River, to a play performed by the Machickanee Players; the possibilities are endless.

Of course, the Breakwater Park and Harbor continues to be one of the most visited amenities in Oconto. Locals will be glad to tell you about the “big one that got away”.
