TRANSPORTATION OPT IN/OUT

This year, all students must opt-in/out for transportation. The PRIMARY parent/guardian on file will receive an email at the beginning of August from Kobussen Buses, Ltd. (no-reply@transfinder.com) registration for each student at the beginning of August. If you do not receive the email(s) by Monday, August 5th, check your spam/junk folders. If you do not find it there, then reach out to Kobussen at (920) 473-4143 or kobussen@oconto.k12.wi.us, and we'll make sure the email address we have is correct and will resend the email—only one submission per student. If transportation needs change before or at any time during the school year, please contact Kobussen to update your needs.

Bus Rider Expectations

Students riding to and from school on transportation provided by the school must follow some basic safety rules. This applies to school-owned buses as well as any contracted transportation that may be provided.

The driver is responsible for student safety and may assign seating or direct the student in any reasonable manner to maintain that safety.

The following behaviors are expected of all students:

Prior to loading (on the road and at school)

Each student shall:

  1. Be on time at the designated loading zone (5 minutes prior to the scheduled stop);

  2. Stay off the road at all times while walking to and waiting for the bus;

  3. Line up in a single file line off the roadway to enter the bus;

  4. Wait until the bus is completely stopped before moving forward to enter;

  5. Refrain from crossing a highway until the bus driver signals it is safe;

  6. Go immediately to a seat and be seated.

It is the parent’s responsibility to inform the bus driver when their child will not be boarding the bus. The bus will not wait.

During the trip

Each student shall:

  1. Remain seated while the bus is in motion;

  2. Keep head, hands, arms, and legs inside the bus at all times;

  3. No littering on the bus or throwing anything from the bus;

  4. Keep books, packages, coats, and all other objects out of the aisle;

  5. Be courteous to the driver and to other bus riders;

  6. No tampering with the bus or any of its equipment.

  7. No food or drinks on routes.

Leaving the bus

Each student shall:

  1. Remain seated until the bus has stopped;

  2. Cross the road, when necessary, at least ten (10) feet in front of the bus, but only after the driver signals that it is safe;

  3. Be alert to a possible danger signal from the driver.

  4. The driver will not discharge students at places other than their regular stop at home or school unless they have proper authorization from school officials.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR SCHOOL-PROVIDED TRANSPORTATION?

Rural Students

A student attending elementary, middle, or high, including four- and five-year-old kindergarten, is entitled to transportation by the public school district in which the student resides if the student resides two or more miles from the school the student is entitled to attend. Some students may reside in an area considered to be "Unusually Hazardous." Unusually hazardous is an area within two miles of school that jeopardizes the safety of the student traveling to and from school. For example, excessive traffic, no sidewalks, etc. Students in "Unusually Hazardous" areas may be picked up with the rural students.

In-City Students

OUSD offers several pick-up locations throughout the City. Buses will pick up students at these locations before school and drop them off at these locations after school. Oconto Middle School is our main hub for buses. Students can get on the high school or elementary school bus from the middle school before school and also return to the middle school via bus at the end of the school day. See the In-City Bus Schedule on this page for specific times and locations.

4K Students

All 4K students are eligible for pick-up and drop-off from their homes, whether they are rural students or live in the City. This is ONLY for 4K students. Once they move to kindergarten, they are only eligible to ride the bus from home if they live two or more miles from the school or fall within an unusually hazardous area.

Open Enrollment Students

Generally, parents are responsible for providing transportation to and from school for students attending school under a tuition waiver or the public school open enrollment program. While school districts may provide some transportation for such students, the nonresident school district is prohibited from picking up or dropping off students within the boundaries of the resident school district without permission from the resident school district. However, if a child is living outside the school district where they are enrolled, upon the parent's request, OUSD may provide transportation for the student from/to an agreed-upon location within the district.
